Truth Be Told
Regular blogging here since the beginning of 2008 has proven to be an elusive goal. By saying even that, I am probably engaging in what could properly be considered a textbook definition of the word "understatement".
"DANG straight," some may now be exclaiming, "you've practically been AWOL for four months -- you usually create more posts in a single month that all of 2008 -- and inquiring minds want to know: what's the deal with that?"
Well, it really boils down to this:
As further proof of God's sense of humour and comedic timing, things at our base were brought into the light on the day before Post-Charismatic? was published in the U.K., and our decision-point about our future in YWAM came the day after the book's release.
To make a long story short, the YWAM base that Wendy and I have been at for the past couple of years has chosen to emphasize the teachings of a local Dominionist church (link provided for the morbidly curious), which includes a heavy dose of hyper-Prosperity (Health & Wealth) teachings, and also the authoritarianism of "never question your leaders" (especially if they call themselves "Apostle").
In short, pretty much everything that I wrote against in my book. Hence the recognition of God's comedic sense of timing as all this was brought into the light.
To anticipate the questions that we have been asked by local friends and family:
"DANG straight," some may now be exclaiming, "you've practically been AWOL for four months -- you usually create more posts in a single month that all of 2008 -- and inquiring minds want to know: what's the deal with that?"
Well, it really boils down to this:
![]() | 1. I was in Mexico for all of January and February, leading a DTS Outreach (but still managed the occasional post) 2. Our YWAM base has been going through some... interesting changes, so we've been chilling in the aftermath. |
![]() | For perspective, it's important to know that YWAM is a very large and very doctrinally diverse organization. While there are commonly held values for every base in YWAM, there is also a great deal of latitude when it comes to doctrinal emphases and practices. And each YWAM base has a great deal of autonomy and freedom to develop in its own way, depending on the leadership team, and ultimately the base directors. |
In short, pretty much everything that I wrote against in my book. Hence the recognition of God's comedic sense of timing as all this was brought into the light.
To anticipate the questions that we have been asked by local friends and family:
- Wendy and I are doing just fine! For us, the "bringing it into the light" represented an answer to prayer in a big way. We had sensed something was afoot after returning from Mexico, and had been praying that God would make things really obvious so that we could see where things were going, and make decisions accordingly.
- Leaving a specific YWAM base is NOT synonymous with leaving YWAM.
- No, we don't know what God has for us next... yet.
- Yes, we have every confidence that if He could so clearly answer our prayers as to revealing what was brewing at our (now former) YWAM base, He will also be clear in leading us into what's next, and where, and when, and how.

Meddicine Hat may not look so bad now!! May still be a good idea ;0
So sorry though. The website looks to be all that we left too. I hope the friendships you have developed will not be too strained for you and your wife.
Is it me or is this dominionist/covering/prosperity virus spreading unchecked?
I'm morbidly curious and checked out the dominion website. yuk. I need a shower, and then I'll pray for you and your family.
Leighton,
In my not particularly humble opinion, I believe we are seeing the final surge of this nonsense before it sinks under the weight of its own ridiculousness. (And I lived in this world for a little too long myself.)
Robby - glad you are out from under it, mate. Perhaps Barb is right - MH here we come!
you and wendy are always welcome to come back to winnipeg to do house churches with natasha and me :)
Barb,
This will sound more dismal than it feels, but we're pretty much 100% off the radar for anyone associated with our (former) YWAM base.
And Medicine Hat was just a joke -- although my mother says she almost had a coronary when she read it, and has promised me that she will NOT be visiting us for Christmas if it had been real. :)
Leighton,
It seems like it's spreading faster and further. We have several other churches in Kelowna that have totally bought into the New Apostolic Reformation, and therefore we have several "apostles" vying for pre-emninence in our city. But because no-one wants to disturb "the unity" city-wide, they choose to over-look what's happening.
David,
Yeah, showering afterwards is probably a good thing, although we appreciate the prayers even more! :)
Bill,
I really, REALLY hope you're right, but I'm not holding my breath. But this is one instance where being wrong would bring great joy.
Seanster (rhymes with monster), Seano (rhymes with Beano?)...
And I know we'd have a good time doing that! I have fond memories of our worship jam when I last got a chance to hang out with you guys. And we love Winnipeg and I'm still a bigtime Bombers fan.
But, we'll have to wait and see what the Big Guy has to say. :)
Leighton, Bill and Robbie,
I wish it would all collapse too but I got to see it infiltrate into our CLB here. It appeals so much to the pride of wanting to "do more for the Kingdom" and be someone - a big someone for God. I can only see it growing and growing.
My biggest concern is seeing it taken into 3rd world countries (ie Rwanda) where people have been known to actually kill those who "touch God's anointed" or disagree with a certain philosophy or faith.
As we walked out of our group here my husband said that it was a good thing we did not live 500 years ago or we would have been burned at the stake.
jeepers robby. what a lot you've had going on. praying for your family.
Robby, I will pray for you. I know, as you do, that God has a plan for you and will redeem this time faithfully. Listen carefully during the transition; it seems we often are distracted at such times and can miss important direction!
robby,
as I told you at CF, praying for you brother
Wow, I have been reading your blog for a while now and that is quite the news...
The diversity of YWAM, and how different YWAM bases can be really shocks me sometimes. Have had a look at this, YWAM Guidelines for Justice and Reconcilliation? Just doesn't really sit well...
I'll be praying that God will lead you in the right direction.
I just got off work today after a long several days away to end up reading this! Yuck! That's so weird that you would be going through this at the same time that my family is going through something quite similar (just change the name of the Kelowna church).
I don't know what your plans are but I vote that you move here to the Kootenays.
Please!!!
Dang, if it's not one thing it's another...
So sorry it has come to this kind of an ending. Hope your family are processing healthily.
I don't want to write platitudes. I know y'all will figure things out. Christ under you, over you, beside you on your left and right.
Dana
OK,
What is it with you and Wendy...and my mother-in-law!?!?! It seams God uses the three of you in ways I have not seen in anyone else. The three of you bring issues in chuches/outreaches to the forefront like a pimple just screaming to get out!!
I see it as a blessing on the three of you. Anything that is not of God just can't stand being around the three of you so it has to reveal itself and get dealt with!!
I am praying for you and your family!!
btw rob
i think it's retarded that you have to go through this kind of stuff.
