Hockey Fights & the Institutional Church
If I may be permitted a truly Canadian moment here, I just want to ponder that timeless question:
What is it that makes us genuinely feel anger and offense when the "goon" beats up on one of our guys, yet we leap to our feet -- even in the non-combat zone known as "the living room" -- to triumphantly cheer when our "enforcer" gives one of the bad guys a bloody nose?
If bloody noses are being meted out in the publishing world, on what criteria are we judging who the "goons" are, and who are the "enforcers"?
Is it based on whether or not we like the one getting the bloody nose?
Just wonderin'...
![]() | Why is the dirty scrapper on the other team called a "goon" whom we loathe and despise... When the dirty scrapper on OUR team is the "enforcer" whom we all love and applaud? |

Same reason we have intelligence gathering assets and the other nation has spies.
I have the strength of my conviction,
You are stubborn and
they are pig-headed...
I think it's something to do with total depravity. IMHO

You mean we're not all on the same team? What is hogwash to some is like gospel to another.
Hopefully we look at the veracity of the facts being presented in a book. However, interpretation of facts is not completely objective and is usually influenced by our feelings about the author.
The experiences we have of certain authors earn for them either our trust or our lack of regard. There are too many good books to waste time on those that don't somehow enrich you.
heh it's not fun if you don't go to church and a boxing match breaks out...
or is that hockey?
Sorry if my first comment doesn't make sense. I was drifting off to sleep when I wrote it.
While there are people like MacArthur that I will probably never agree with, I don't loathe or despise them, and I don't have a problem arguing against or rejecting their ideas.
It seems one person's goon is another person's enforcer. Maybe someday it won't be that way.
There are some people who don't mind a scuffle.
Not everyone cried foul when the critics came out. Some of us actually decided to do interact honestly with what they were saying and give credit where it is due.
Where we cross the line is when we stop debating ideas and start attacking people, mocking them, misrepresenting them and labeling them.
We need to approach all criticism objectively. People that we may disagree with may say something legimate, let us not throw the baby out with the bath water. If someone we agree with states something wrong or dishonest, we need to stand on the side of truth.
If , like in hockey, we were all friends off the ice, a little brawl isn't so bad is it? It is interesting though, that Christians have little tolorance for those we disagree with.
BTW I always love to see a little hockey break out when watching a fight!! LOL
The team I'm cheering for is any team Tie Domi is on! Yay! enforcers!
Oh, and Grace? I'm always asleep when I post. Don't worry about it.
i have met the enemy, and it be we.
here's to the hat-trick of God...
i was thinking about your post today as i drove back from a band meeting. on DNTO, they were interviewing an old hockey goon (since it's hockey day in canada today). he described being full of self doubt, insecurity, and fear. it was kind of sad. the saddest part was when he described hearing the upcoming hockey game schedules, and having to sit for weeks at a time dreading the games, knowing that he'd probably fight.
very sad.
