Fourth
Four years ago today, blogging commenced here at robbymac.
There's been a number of changes to the look of this site over the past four years, as well:
And without putting too much weight on "significant numbers", it is interesting to note the following:
Since the inception of this blog, the word "journey" has figured prominently in the imagery on this site. And in hindsight, I'm really glad that it did, as there have been many twists and turns along the way, and it truly has been a "journey". From the early days of just starting to tell my own story, to putting down some thoughts on Detoxing From Church, through the online version of Post-Charismatic which Kingsway Communications will be publishing in book form later this fall, and now as we continue to delve into what it means to be charis-missional... yeah, the only word that really describes it has been and continues to be "journey".
Thanks to all who are walking with me, and here's to another year!
![]() | There have often been changes, as Journeymates came and went, and I shifted from being a bassist in a Celtic Rock band (with some graphic design work here and there) to being full-time at YWAM Okanagan. |

- 30 years ago I became a Christian at a high school crusade; despite being raised in a good Christian family, it took me a few years longer than more spiritually sensitive people like, say, my little sister, to "get it"
- 20 years ago, I graduated from Providence College with a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies, and was all gung-ho about a future in pastoral ministry
- 10 years ago, Wendy and I left Vancouver Island after seven years of pastoral ministry, and crashed head-first into the wilderness known as "detoxing from church".

hey robby- congratulations. i'm glad to have gotten to know you- even knowing that I creep you out a little.
Rob, just wanted to say how much I've enjoyed my visits to your site. It's too bad we never got to meet on the island...I still cross paths of some of your old friends from time to time ( Gord Cheney, Trevor Haug, Bruce Friesen, Hans Andressen ).
Anyways looking forward to the book in the fall...and to another year of your musings. Peace...Ron Cole.
Further in and higher up.. this crazy journey goes on and on altho we are somewhat out of touch these days. Need to grab a coffee one day soon!
You know, I've been reading your blog for a couple of months, and enjoy alot. I really appreciated your 'Detox' series, as it's helping me to adjust after leaving my church of 12 years.
Funny thing, though, when I saw your picture, you looked familiar...
I think you may have spoken at my old church years ago..
And, now, Ron, above me here in the posts, mentions some names I know..weird. Small world, even in the blogosphere.
Blessings!
Cindy,
Creeped out by you? Perish the thought!
I am completely comfortable with everything about you, especially the fact that we live approximately 2700 miles (4345 kilometres) apart, with an international border between!
Ron,
We almost came to the Island a couple of weeks ago, when we were on Bowen Island, but those artificially-inflated ferry prices got in the way.
Ya never know, though, we may yet meet in the analog world!
Len,
How about next week?
Che,
I led worship with our GodRock band at a Pentecostal church in Powell River in the fall of 1992, just weeks before getting run out of my church for being "too Vineyard". Was that the place/event? That was a LONG time ago! You've got a good memory.
I'm always amazed at how many people have read the Detoxing From Church series, and I'm both humbled and grateful that it's been helpful to others.
Hey Rob..
Nah, I wasn't in Powell River then.
I was in Abbotsford, at Valley Christian Fellowship. I think you may have come in the play worship. Maybe for our GodRock night (youth) with Murray Dueck. Maybe?
Anyways, I was in that charismatic circle for alot of years before tossing in the towel...
I'm in Powell River now, in a HomeChurch. I think you know Doug Schutze, and Jeremy Prouse. Good friends of mine...
Che,
All roads lead to Godrock, eh? Yeah, we often joined the Valley crew for Godrock and I remember leading worship there a few times. I also remember having some amazing times together with the Valley crew at God-Stock '95 in Mission BC.
Haven't seen Murray in years, but we go way back.
It IS a small world, after all.
Yep, kinda crazy..in a nice way.
Murray's wife, Kelly, is my best friend...have been since the early '90's.
Wierd to move to a new town, get new friends, start something new...and bump into old connections..kinda.
I like it..must be the dutch in me...always looking for a pattern..
Anyways, I like your blog.
See ya around...
