Let The Pigeons Loose!

The past two weeks have been a crazy rush of finishing renovations at the YWAM base, finalizing all aspects of the Crossroads Discipleship Training School (which Wendy & I will be staffing & teaching at), and just the usual and expected general mayhem that accompanies the beginning of two -- count 'em, TWO -- DTS's at the same time (the other is Korean-language KDTS), while also running an ESL (English As Second Language) school as well.

Tomorrow we kick off the DTS's with a traditional Fijian "pig in the ground" lu'au, complete with letting the various South Seas Islanders loose with some of their awe-inspiring dances (we have a lot of Fijians and some Tongans on staff here). It will be a total blast!

Then, as the DTS's begin the next morning, I may find some semblance of normalcy returning, and with it more regular blogging.

An Aside

On a recent trip into the freezing Canadian Prairies, as we wound our way through a forest gravel road, 50 miles south of Medicine Hat, late at night, we suddenly heard our 17-year-old daughter Jo pipe up from the backseat:

"The Lord says there's a deer on the road right around the next curve."

I slowed down as we navigated the curve (the trees were very thick and it was pitch-black out), and voilĂ !, there was the deer. Because I had slowed down, we didn't have a head-on collision with the deer in the headlights.

Glad my daughter speaks up when God tells her stuff!

How could anyone miss that tipi? It's freakin' massive!

The YWAM base we stayed at was about 40 miles south of Medicine Hat, in the Cypress Hills, which is not as flat as the Hat, but very beautiful and the people were just as friendly.

Jo also got pulled over by the cops driving through Medicine Hat: she'd been stopped on a hill at a traffic light, and then a cop pulled up behind her.

She was nervous about starting on a hill (our car is manual transmission), and was terrified of rolling backwards into a police car, so she popped the clutch and squealed through the intersection like... well, somebody trying to avoid the cops.

So, the next thing we see is blue & red flashing lights in the mirrors, and heard that wonderful sound of sirens...

And a good-natured police officer advised her to "ease up on the clutch", and gave our family a great source of teasing at Jo's expense for the next week.

Jo will never forget Medicine hat. Ever.

Hey Rob,

I am over in Victoria right now visiting my family.

While doing my sister's taxes (Krista), I brought up your blog and asked her if she recognized your picture...she had no clue it was you.

She said that the lack of long hair and the grey beard disguised you enough to not be recognizable.

I tried to find a picture of you and Wendy to show her, but your last anniversary posting had very young pictures of both of you (She recognized you right away then).

So I shall attribute the busy-ness to the lack of acknowledgement of my story? Fair enough. I'll just assume you haven't been back to that post to see it and that you aren't specifically avoiding me because you've remembered who I am.

Thanks for the update and Jo-stories.

Love the pic! Wondered when you'd let us see you new cool glasses...

I recently advanced to 1.25 readers at age 51. Years ago, my father-in-law told me in no uncertain terms that I would absolutely need glasses by the time I was 40. Well, I didn't even need the readers until I was 45. I still feel smug about that, even though I'm sure it's strictly genetic for both my FIL and me :)

Former Methodist ministers in our town (husband and wife team) were Tongan.

Ok, just blathering now...

Cool about your daughter speaking what God told her...it's amazing when our children, whether young like mine or teens like yours, listen and hear stuff from God and it gets confirmed right away, quite a faith builder.

Medicine Hat: man, the RCMP in the Hat are aggressive. I see them eveytime I go through (got stopped once on my drive to BC but they let us off) and I've been warned by other friends that they are ticket happy.

Cypress Hills: I'm biased but the Saskatchewan side is better... but they are truly amazing and spectacular.

Have fun DTSing.

Cool glasses!

(I wondered what the photographer was saying while you were "posing".)

Cool stories about Jo!

Grace,

The professional photographer (Wendy), was just doing a lighting check, so I was goofing off.

But, being a goofy-looking kind of guy, that picture looked better than my "properly" posed ones, so...

Hey Robby, nice goofin' ;-D you look just like a real serious DTS-teacher. Nice glasses.

Cool story about Jo, I knew she was my hero, and now she's going to be my example too: it's awesome that people just listen to God and recognize His voice, and have the guts to say it out loud. In this case it's pretty 'harmless' with family around (in case it wasn't Gods voice and no deer would be there - anymore -), but in church or other pastoral situations, it can be more tricky. Wouldn't it be nice if all christians get the opportunity to speak out... from their own mind (common sence and stuff ;-D) but more important: from God's mind. Thank you guys that you raised Jo (and the rest of the bunch) to be living close to God, and to speak out. Thanx to God that He's in all that!!

Have fun CDTS'ing!!! (we miss you guys, and wish we were back)

Hold it, hold it... did I just hear some pining for Kelowna from an unlikely source? Hope you guys are well.

And I know when I think of a lu'au, Kelowna leaps naturally to my mind. Not.

Rob, most cool. I have to say the new image is more becoming than the one with the eye patch. You can't run a DTS with an eye patch... not that you look respectable yet.

(PS - I think your comment anti-spam captcha is making some lewd abbreviations at me!)

Nico-Dirk, Diana, and rest of Dutch clan,

We miss you guys tons too! You'd enjoy the crew for this year's CDTS -- Vono is leading the school and he flat-out rocks.

Hey, we could always use some experienced staff out here, y'know (totally unsubtle hint...)

Bro. Maynard,

Why wouldn't you think of Kelowna when lu'au is mentioned? Check out the Bula Vinaka post for video evidence of the South Seas Islander influence. This was right after we all polished off two pigs that were cooked underground (although the Fijians reserved the heads for later).

Good times, good times!
