Musical Homage Part Two
The first one was so fun, why not franchise it?
These represent a smattering of the recording artists that were significant influences (for me, anyway) in the 80's. Hopefully, more people can play than when we were dipping into the ancient history of the 70's. Name the artist and album (again, some are no-brainers...)!
And for even more fun, how about these influential Christian artists from the 80's? (Brother Maynard should definitely get the last one!)
And now, in keeping with my yearly goal of NOT shopping in the crazed lemmings-on-acid malls the weekend before Christmas, I'll be back in a bit...

OK, Here it goes:
Phil Collins - ?
Rush -
Bruce Springsten - Born In The USA
?
AC/DC - Back In Black
?
?
Journey - ?
?
As for the Christian ones - I have no idea because I was not a Christian in the 80's...in any way, shape or form!!
Rob,
I have been thinking alot about our fun jarring over disco music and i realized that it is not disco music per ce that i like. It is more musicians with a passion and a gift. You look at bands like ABBA and The Bee Gee's and you see incredible music genius. i also like bands like Boston, GNR, Led Zepplin, Queen, and Prince. I don't listen to them much any more (Especially Prince), but I have tremendous respect for the people that wrote the songs for those bands. They are mordern day Mozarts.
Why am I going on about this, you ask? I think God has shown me that He gives us all a talent to do what He wants us to do. If we are lucky enough to figure that out and find the same passion that these musicians have for our everyday work we end up like that missionary man in Winterpeg. He did what God told him to do, and people of all religions and walks of life respected him for that.
I pray that I find that in my life!!
God Bless, Neil
unless Whiteheart and David Meece are in that second group, I'm stumped- except of course the one you can read larry norman on...
just saw darryl mansfield.
now i'm thinking stryper. geez this is going to bug me and i've got stuff to do...
petra. whew. now i'm really leaving.
First group: (artists)
Phil Collins
Rush
Springsteen
?
AC/DC
Kim Mitchell
?
Journey
Cockburn
(not too difficult as I can read most of them)
Second group:
Even easier as I have all of them but the Steve Taylor one (although I might even have that one on cassette somewhere).
Petra - More Power to Ya
Steve Taylor
Rez - Colours
Larry Norman - Something New Under the Son
Darrell Mansfield - Revelation
Undercover - God Rules
Okay, we're getting closer...
To confirm what's been said so far:
1. Phil Collins -- Face Value
2. Rush -- Power Windows
3. Bruce Springsteen -- Born in the USA
4. (I'm really, really surprised no-one has got this one yet!)
5. AC/DC -- Black In Black (major no-brainer)
6. YES! Kim Mitchell -- Akimbo Alogo (the original album artwork, not the re-release)
7. (Think Canadian, Boy Inside The Man...)
8. Journey -- Frontiers
9. Bruce Cockburn -- Stealing Fire
And for the second list rainer got 'em:
1. Petra -- More Power To Ya
2. Steve Taylor & Some Band -- On The Fritz (although his "I Want To Be A Clone" was the album that really set a new pace for music at the time)
3. Colours -- Resurrection Band
4. Larry Norman -- Something New Under The Son
5. Darrell Mansfield -- Revelation
6. Undercover -- God Rules!
So, there's just two left -- I can't give any hints for #4; although again, I'm really amazed no-one recognized this album!
OK,
Is #4 U2 - Under The Blood Red Sky?
#7 is Tom Cochran & Red Rider - The Symphony Sessions
Neil
Cindy - David Meece and White Snake? Wha-? Oh, never mind!
I shoulda got here sooner, I guess... Neil, you're right on #4, I spotted it right off, as well as the one Rob said I was supposed to!
I guess that's all of them. Wow, the 80's, seems like only yesterday. Maybe I should be posting an image of my FGTH picture disk... I'm sure I could stump people with Test Department, maybe even Billy Bragg. Heck, if "Blood Red Sky" was that hard, maybe I should post the cover from "Boy"... along with the trivia question of what movie had it in the soundtrack, what song and what scene. Nah, that's just evil ;^)
Lotsa fun, Rob!
PS - I just realized looking at the Rez Band album... they spelled "Colours" correctly and not in the American way. I'd never noticed that until now.
Neil,
Your omniscience is complete!
#4 is indeed U2's Under A Blood Red Sky -- the first full U2 album I actually sat down and listened to (having only heard radio singles before that). I became an instant convert to all things U2 as a result of Blood Red Sky.
And #7 is truly Tom Cochrane and Red Rider "The Symphony Sessions". I had the privilege of seeing these guys live during that tour (as well as Kim Mitchell but that's another story) and that band is absolutely incredible. Musicianship like few bands I've ever seen.
And Bro. Maynard, funny you should mention that -- I'd never noticed it either, till you pointed it out. I guess 'cuz it was spelled CORRECTLY, it didn't stand out; this was also my first Rez Band album, which led to many more over the years.
Okay-
#1 I said WhiteHEART not White Snake.
#2 I was tired
#3 I suppose (cough)I've left a lot of the 80's behind me. I enjoy the reminiscing, but I'm not so attached to the 80's as I was in, umm, the 80's. :-)
Cindy, my southern sister,
The 80's are coming back! My teenagers told me so. My eldest daughter has leg warmers, fer cryin' out loud...
Anyway, ya gotta admit -- plus les changes, plus le meme chose, n'est-ce pas?
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! I have spent the last two decades getting councilling (sp?) to deal with the 80's. ITs that Madona girl. She has brought the leg-warmers back with her last video.
I am booking my next appointment tomorrow!! LOL!!
Neil
Robby- isn't your daughter a dancer? They've worn leg warmers all along.
Either way, i'm going to shut my eyes and keep my hairspray buried at the back of the cabinet. And no, I won't acquiesce. Maybe you Canadians can't change, but I will stand firm. There's no going back.
Besides, shouldn't you rescind your statement solely on the basis that you've sent Neil into a psychiatric episode of some kind? :-)
Cindy,
Neil will be fine. Drummers have these sorts of episodes all the time. :)
Yes, my daughter is a dancer, but the leg warmers thing is very recent; her older teachers are appalled that leg warmers are coming back. Jo, who is also teaching the younger children ballet as well this year, considers herself a fashion role model for the next generation.
Dude, the 80's aren't coming back, they are back! In fact, all the cool kids have been doing the 80's for at least 4 years now. Just listen to any good bands out these days, The Killers, Mobile, My Chemical Romance (to name a few) and it's all laced with the 80's. Or for the Xian versions {but NOT the ones approved by your 'play it safe' youth leader) try on Mute Math, Sleeping at Last, Bernard, or Gasoline Heart, Jonezetta, to name but a few among many.
Personally, I've been out buying flannel shirts so I can be up on the 90's comeback!
HA HA HA!!!
KSG,
And two of the bands you mentioned -- the Killers and My Chemical Romance -- are among my kids' faves. Along with Underoath and The February's.
See? Neil is laughing. It's all good. I'm sure the laugh wasn't maniacal or sinister in any waveform... :)
Right, Neil?
Hey Rob,
The laugh is not maniacal or sinister in any file extension.
What scares me is that I have no idea what the bands you and KSG are talking about.
I am officially out of touch with todays youth.
What age does Jo teach ballet? My girls absolutely looovvveee ballet.
Neil
KSG is correct. The 80's have been back for about 4 years. I hate the fact that the music I grew up listening to is now considered retro and is played along with 70's music on the same station.
When I was a youth pastor what always used to crack me up was the young people would tell me they had a new favorite singer and I would ask who. They would say Madonna. I was like she is so not new.
I absolutely adore The Killers and My Chemical Romance. I also love Snow Patrol. Thanks for the other bands to look into. KSG is also right that these are not approved by your local youth pastor. Most of my religious friends find it inconceivable that I would listen to "secular" music.
