Boxing Week

No, this is not a reference to Rocky Balboa. In Canada, like our distant cousins across The Pond, we have a national holiday the day after Christmas called "Boxing Day". Well, it's a holiday except for anyone who works retail in a mall. If I avoided malls before Christmas because of the lemmings-on-acid crowds, you can be assured I stay even farther away when the lemmings added greed to their acid.

Just been enjoying time with my family; my parents flew in on Christmas Day and we're having a great time hanging out with them. Just takin' it easy -- for a week, anyway.

Currently reading:

Perspectives on Spirit Baptism: Five Views

The Charismatic Century: The Enduring Impact of the Azusa Street Revival

Exiles: Living Missionally in a Post-Christian Culture

Currently -- as a result of Christmas presents -- listening to:

Bob Seger: Face the Promise

Good to hear ol' Bob crankin' out the tunes.

Christmas with Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby

Now this is truly RETRO!

My daughter Jo was thrilled to also get a Frank Sinatra CD for Christmas (dancers are much more eclectic in their musical tastes -- she also likes Underoath, The Februarys and Johnny Cash). I'm liking the Christmas CD with Sinatra & Crosby for two reasons: (A) it really is "classic", even though these guys are way before my time, and (B) I've been disappointed that recent Christmas projects sing about everything BUT Jesus' birth, but Sinatra & Bing do both. So, if you want a mix of fun Christmas songs AND some great Christmas hymns/carols, you might want to check out the oldskewl dudes from the 1940's.

Sufjan Stevens has a great "Jesus" Christmas album

Those books look interesting.

David is really enjoying Exiles - I get it next. I just finished Earl Creps Offroad Disciplines - it is FANTASTIC! Highly recommend it if you haven't read it yet.

Robby,

I'm glad you found the Hayford book. I was going to recommend it to you - it has a lot of similarities to your post-charismatic project - highlighting the strengths and excesses of the various movements within the Charismatic and Pentecostal movements. It was a good read.

I grew up in a Foursquare church, and attended their Bible college. St. Jack ordained my parents.

Hope you enjoy it!

Makeesha,

Thanks for the heads-up on Sufjan and the recommendation for the book. I'm just starting Exiles now even though it came in the mail a month ago -- we have an unwritten rule in our house, and since Wendy grabbed Exiles when it first arrived, I must learn patience and wait my turn. :)

Daniel,

I'm about half-way through the Hayford book, and it's been a good read so far. I like how they keep calling everyone back to the missions/missional passion of the early Pentecostals and Charismatics.

The "Five Views" one I've actually been wading through for awhile. Some of these theological writers seem to excel in verbosity that threatens at times to obfuscate their intent. Or words to that effect.

Still, it's always intriguing to read these point/counter-point kind of books. That's why I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out when Listening to the Beliefs of Emerging Churches: Five Perspectives comes out in February '07. Robber Webber is the editor/moderator, and the contributing authors are Mark Driscoll, John Burke, Dan Kimball, Doug Pagitt, and Karen Ward. Should be an interesting read (at least, I'm hoping that it is!).

Rob,

How can youread three books at once?!? I can barely get through one at a time!!!

I have a Bing Crosby Christmas CD that is two disks. It is incredible. There is even different versions on the same songs. I love to listen to it.

Another favorite Chrtistmas CD of mine is a David Foster Compolation (sp?) with a bunch of different singers and an instrumental rendition of "Here Come The Bells".

Breath Taking.

Neil

Hey Rob,

Please do a post about the Jack Hayford book... it's on my list of maybe reads so I'd love to hear a review. Although I'm not a 4square dude, I have lots of respect for Jack Hayford.

My Xmas reading acquisitions included Rob Bell's Velvet Elvis (though my wife claimed it first) and Graham Cooke/Gary Goodell's Permission Granted.
For music... Switchfoot's Oh Gravity and Happy Christmas Vol 4.
