"Christian love" was viewed as a weakness to be overcome; the goal was to crush their adversaries. Like St. Paul before his conversion, they thought they were doing God a favour. Anyone who questioned their attitude, methodology, "facts", or conclusions was immediately denounced as rebellious and possibly unsaved.

very good. And I personally receive that wisdom and accept the conviction that comes with it.
Yup.
I am learning how to leave off the defensiveness, and in doing so I have been changed for the good; I actually listen to the other and try to ask questions, rather than argue. I'm getting better at not even picking up the ball most of the time. There's a lot more love and peace that way.
Rob, I finished reading the Post-Charismatic Papers last week- Wouldn't some institution of higher learning accept that as a Master's project? I know that's not why you did it, but damn it's good, and you ought to be recognized for it.

Immature zeal is often tempered by pain and suffering, which hopefully produce humility and love.
I've had to trade in my black and white lenses for shades of grey.
I've come to believe that the best argument in most situations is a life lived according to a different set of values. Of course "they" may never validate or recognize that, but I don't answer to them anyway.

I'm not sure if you'd remember me but I too once went to Zion until I took a position at another church. I returned to Zion from college shortly before you moved out east.
